Oil Dipstick

Motor oil keeps crucial moving parts of your engine lubricated - without adequate oil, you could be facing big problems with your car, truck, or SUV. Fortunately, knowing how to check car oil is easy, and it's a great way to give yourself extra peace of mind on your commutes around Bradley and Manteno.

How to Check Car Oil

First, be aware that many newer cars, trucks, and SUVs have electronic oil monitors, so check your owner's manual - you might not have to get your hands dirty at all!

Fortunately, manually checking your oil is also a simple task:

  • Be sure you've parked the car on level ground, and only check your oil when the vehicle is off and the engine is cold.
  • Pop the hood and locate the dipstick
  • Pull out the dipstick and wipe all of the oil off of it.
  • Put the dipstick back in all the way, then pull it out and compare the level of your car's oil to the markings on the oil dipstick. Based on where the oil is on the dipstick, you may need to add more oil.

It's also important that you buy the type of engine oil recommended in your car's owner's manual. If you do need to top off your oil, add it a little at a time and check the level periodically to avoid adding too much.
